Expat Holidays: Home or Away?

Summer sun in paradise or family feuding back home?

This week has seen many schools in Zuid-Holland return, but for others around the world the summer vacation is in full swing. Expats and vacations is an interesting topic. Where do expats go on holiday?

Many people living abroad choose to go back to their birth or 'home' country for a 'vacation' because that's when they have the time off work to go visit friends and family. But is this really a vacation?

If you go back 'home' for your summer break do you come back feeling refreshed, recharged and ready for your return to normal life? Or does it feel like you had no break at all?

Some of you have already let your views be known on Twitter:

"Hell no! We love our family/friends but it's hard work, stressful (all the family feuds) and utterly exhausting!!!

"That's the only holiday I got! :-)"

Vote in the poll on the right hand side and share know your comments on the subject. I would love to hear your thoughts and how you spend your summer break.

Going 'home' is usually not at all a restful vacation. You've got your doctor appointments, your shopping, your new glasses, the joy of a mammogram. Seeing your family is of course good (usually) but can be exhausting if they don't all live in the same place.

For a 'real' vacation we go somewhere different. We're just back from Albania. Albania, yes, a beautiful country. We were there for a reunion with friends we made 25 years ago in Indonesia, and this group gets together once a year somewhere in Europe. We had a great time.

While living in Armenia a few years ago, we used to go to Italy on vacation.

We were planning to go somewhere different this year but we had to down grade our plans because of finances which now means we are going back over to London for our holiday. We're turning it back into a bit of a holiday though by renting a car and driving up to the North for a few days.

Coming from Australia, it's just not feasible to return there every year for holidays, but every time I do go back it never feels like a holiday. I try to spend half the time with family and half the time doing something new. However I always feel guilty for not spending enough time with my parents and it often spoils my 'free' time.

This year we are taking a zonvakantie in September when everyone is back at work/school and we've taken a mini break each month which has been lovely. Something to always look forward to.

Next year we'll have a baby in the mix, so I'm not sure what we'll do! We have been planning to return to Australia for four weeks, but I'm already terrified about the journey with a baby...! See, the trip is still 18 months away and I'm already stressed. Not a holiday at all :P
